Thanks for making today’s meeting great and providing extra feedback to Mark for his Friday presentation.  I’m sure Mark will do a fabulous job and represent Toastmasters well.
Bev, thanks for being Toastmaster today.
Next week’s Toastmaster is Donnamarie.
Gloria and Kathleen joined us again as guests today and both will be bringing back completed applications (Gloria in about 3 weeks) and Kathleen next week.  Also planning to join are Anna Fleming and Kathy S from CSUSM — we are growing quickly.  Karena, a friend of Gloria’s was a guest today as well.
I hope to see you all next week as we wind down our meeting room search.  Our last meeting date is November 9 at UofP.  I did speak with Lois at UoP today…. she has some boxes in their resource center that she says she will make it a point to unpack this week.  Although the chance is remote, it would be awesome if they can find our supplies!

We’ve moved…down the street!

Starting, Wednesday, August 31, we will be at 300 Rancheros Drive. Suite number to be determined next week, but likely will be on the 3rd floor.  The new location is the building just across the street from our current location, and is between Home Town Buffet and ABC Vet.  See you there!!!!

Meeting review 8/17/11

We had a GREAT meeting on Wednesday.  Cheri  (pronounced like the fruit cherry)  was back as our Toastmaster of the week — after much too long of an absence.  Welcome back Cheri!  Her theme was “Back to School” was inspired by her recent school shopping expedition with her grandson.  As you would expect, our DTM did a fabulous job!

Cherie (pronounced like the wine sherry) gave her 2nd speech:  “Ascent to the Top Safely”  She enlightened us with ways to climb Half Dome and other great peaks with tips on safety and comfort.  She let us know how dangerous mountain climbing can be for the ill-prepared.

Brian Sullivan also gave his 2nd speech:  “Stress Fractures–Don’t the the Fracture Stress You Out.”  He talked about discovering that his injury sustained during a 10 mile run was a stress fracture and how to cope with having one and letting it heal.

How great it is that we have so many very ACTIVE members in our club — who climb, run, etc.  No wonder we have so much energy to spare!

Jaime, as  grammmarian, chose CURRICULUM as the word of the day.

Lela led table topics and each participant was to end with a quote they drew from a bag.

Tom ended his with “Anyone who thinks the art of conversation is dead ought to tell a child to go to bed”.  ~Robert Gallagher

Jaime’s ended with a quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson:  “You send your child to the schoolmaster, but ’tis the schoolboys who educate him.”

Mark talked about 3rd grade and “Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.”  ~John Dewey

Cheri ended up with one of my favorites:  “If there were no schools to take the children away from home part of the time, the insane asylums would be filled with mothers”.  ~Edgar W. Howe

Evaluators included Lubina (her first time evaluating — great job!), and Mark (who noted that Brian made great strides over his last speech).   Tom Savell stepped in to be our general evaluator.

This week’s award winners included Cherie for speaker, Lubina for evaluator, and Mark for Table Topics.  Congratulations to all three for jobs well done.

If you need more back-to-school quotes to get you through the next couple of weeks, I’ve attached some for you!

With only 4 days left, make sure you are prepared for a great meeting next week.  It will be Cherie’s first time as Toastmaster.  Her theme will be FEAR!  She’ll be getting the agenda and details out to you shortly.  Lubina will be giving a farewell speech since she is moving to Northern California after this meeting.  Jaime will also be giving us a reprisal of an earlier great speech.  It will be another great meeting….be sure to be there early and catch all the energy our meeting has to provide.

September 1 is our “BAG”  meeting or….Bring A Guest meeting…think of you you can invite who could benefit from Toastmasters!  Let’s fill the house.  Our theme that day will be “Speaking Southern.”

September 7 is our humorous speech and evaluation contest.  Be prepared to laugh!!!!

September 17 (a Saturday) is the area contest in Vista.

Meeting review 8/10/11

Rachel gave her 10 speech and last speech to earn her CC.  It was bittersweet to hear Rachel speak.  She is moving to Carlsbad and this will be her last meeting with our club.  Her topic was her “Spiritual Bucket List” including love, acceptance, forgiveness, gratefulness, and being present in the moment.  Many interesting props were used….a pink stuffed animal, a clock, Eyore, a bucket, and a basket.  Rachel won best speaker today.  Way to go Rachel!  Her evaluator, Donnamarie, commented on her great use of phrases and props.  Rachel will be joining the Professional Women’s Toastmasters Club now that she has earned her CC.
Lela spoke about the Anatomy and Physiology of a Toastmasters Club — how the officers are present to support the members and  explained the role of each officer.
Tom was a masterful Topics Master having Lubina talk about the positive aspects of Clinton’s presidency and Donnamarie talking about some of the negative aspects.  Brian addressed the effect that a term of office has on an individual.  Jaime took the position that having press, both negative and positive, is good.  Tom had a great collection of Clinton photos that he shared with us as well.  Jaime won best Table Topics.
Tom, Donnamarie and Carol did outstanding jobs as evaluators.  Donnamarie won best evaluator.  Although we will have several members out next week due to business and travel, we still expect to have an incredible meeting with incredible presentations.
Cheri L will be our Toastmaster (agenda and theme to be out shortly) and Cherie V will be one of our speakers.
So, mark your calenders for an energetic Wednesday and bring a guest.  See you then!!!!!!  Remember, it will be the best hour of your week.
